Deep-corals: a submarine view

Credits:  Schmidt Ocean Institute NOAA

This video from Karl Stanley's Idabel submersible shows the amazing diversity of deep-sea corals adjacent to Roatan Marine Park in waters from 400 to 700 meters deep. Deep-sea corals are colonial animals, but they appear like 'trees of the seas'. The coral barnches provide habitat for fish and invertebrates. The corals shown include black corals, sea fans, and stony corals. A squid and smalltooth tiger shark appear, as well as many large sponges.
